Creative Furniture Finishing ~ Custom Portraits
~ Original Landscapes ~ ~ Paintings by Jeanette M. Oxelson ~ |
My friend Calvin is an amazing musician. Lately he’s been playing a lot of traditional Hawaiian Slack-Key melodies and has just released a CD of original surfer tunes. (“Sandy and the Surfsonics” found at www.surfsonics.com and also available on CD Baby.) He uses this wonderful Danelectro electric hard body guitar and decided he wanted a Hawaiian scene painted on it. The finish is extremely high-gloss and was completely blemish-free when he brought it to me. That was my first scare! I knew it would be impossible to duplicate that perfect glossiness, but it would also be impossible for the paint to adhere to it properly. I decided I would have to remove the finish only where the scene would be painted and got out my trusty little Dremel rotary tool. When I discovered just how thin the finish actually was (about 1/16”), that was my second scare! Even the smallest hole could potentially change the sound and ruin the guitar. (Calvin was even more terrified when he called one day to see how things were progressing and I just happened to “mention” I was using a drill on his guitar! Shame on me!) After much very careful sanding and after the painting was finished, I used a flat varnish over just the new painting, to make it pop out from the glossiness of the rest. And Calvin has forgiven me for almost giving him a heart attack!
